Chong moved to the Championship outfit in the summer in a bid to clock up regular first team minutes, but his stint has not gone according to plan.
The winger suffered a thigh injury in October that forced him to go under the knife and has since been spending time on the sidelines.
Chong is on the road to recovery and is currently rehabilitating at Manchester United’s Carrington training complex and there have been suggestions they could cut his loan stint short
However, the Red Devils are not planning to recall the Dutchman from his temporary stint at Birmingham and want him to return to St Andrew’s when he fully fit to return to the pitch.
Chong is currently working away from the senior team on the training pitch as he edges closer to a return.
The 22-year-old is tipped to be fit for full training in around three weeks’ time.
Chong’s current contract at Old Trafford expirers next summer, but Manchester United have the option to extend his stint by one more season.
