The 25-year-old midfielder returned to Lyon on deadline on a loan deal until the end of the season from Tottenham.

The Ligue 1 club have an option to buy the Frenchman for a fee of €65m as part of the agreement with the north London club.

Ponsot insisted that Ndombele just did not provide lip service when he was desperate to return to Lyon on deadline day.

He claimed that the midfielder was financially unattainable for Lyon but the player himself made a significant financial contribution to make sure he rejoined the club last month.

Ponsot was quoted as saying by French sports daily L’Equipe: “It is a loan with option to buy, which is based on the partial support of financial part of the transfer.

“But above all, on the part of Tanguy, there were not only words. He was decisive and it is very rare in this field.

“He is one of the players who were not economically accessible but he had done everything to be so.

“Often, we have words without the facts on the contracts.

“We did our part, we needed a supplement and it was he who provided it.”

Not many are expecting Lyon to take up the option on Ndombele even if he plays well due to the €65m figure.

It remains to be seen whether Spurs agree to negotiate down the price if Lyon make such an approach in the summer.
