Alli struggled with his form at Spurs in recent seasons and the north London giants were looking to offload him last month.

Everton managed to seal a permanent swoop for the 25-year-old on deadline day, with their new boss Frank Lampard playing a huge role in the move.

Former Tottenham striker Berbatov has admitted he is surprised Alli agreed to join the Toffees in January, instead of waiting for a bigger club to provide him with a way out of Spurs.

However, Berbatov added that the presence of Lampard will be a key factor for Alli as he tries to resurrect his faltering career and aims to get back to his best.

“I’m a little surprised that Dele Alli moved to Everton”, Berbatov wrote in his Betfair column.

“They are a good club but I was hoping that he would wait for someone bigger to come in for him given his style of play.

“When he is in form, he is a quality player and was a big reason Spurs reached the Champions League final in 2019.

“I can tell that Frank Lampard is going to be key for Alli.

“I saw how he greeted him at the training ground, obviously there’s a warm connection there which is good for the player to know and that probably helped Alli make the decision to sign.”

Alli joined Everton on an initial free transfer with the Toffees agreeing to pay a fee for his signature if certain sporting stipulations are met.
