The Reds had been tracking Diaz for some time and when Tottenham Hotspur were poised to sign him last month sprung into action to hijack the deal.
Diaz has completed a move worth €60m from Porto and adds to Klopp’s attacking options going forward at Anfield, with much excitement around his arrival.
Many already see the Colombia international as the eventual successor to Sadio Mane and Klopp admits that Liverpool are not just looking at what they need to do now, but also towards building a team for tomorrow.
“Our strategy is to sign the right players at the right moment”, Klopp told a press conference.
“We recognise issues in terms of positions or contracts.
“We will never miss having a look ahead.
“That’s what we are doing. Building a team for today and tomorrow”, he added.
Klopp also had warm words for new boy Diaz, who he admits has been on the Reds’ radar for some time, dubbing him “exceptional”.
“We like pretty much everything about him. I’ve followed him for a while [and he is] exceptional. Skillset and character.
“Really happy we could get him in now. His story so far is a special one. I like that.
“Now he’s one of us. We can’t wait to welcome him here”, the Liverpool manager said.
All eyes will be on when Diaz now makes his bow for Liverpool and how quickly he gets going in a new league and new environment.
