Eddie Howe wanted to sign Henderson on loan late in the window, but Manchester United blocked a move as Ralf Rangnick was not interested in letting him go.

But a lot more went on the final day of the winter transfer window and a swap deal was in the works between the two clubs which would have seen Rangnick secure cover for David de Gea and Newcastle land Henderson.

Manchester United wanted a quality backup for De Gea and were claimed to be interested in taking Dubravka on loan for the rest of the season in exchange for Henderson.

But it has been claimed that the Newcastle shot-stopper rejected the move to Old Trafford on deadline day.

Dubravka was not interested in a move to Manchester United to be the back-up ‘keeper to De Gea, scuppering the move.

He started in Newcastle’s 3-1 win over Everton on Tuesday night, which is being seen as a turning point this season.

Henderson made his third appearance of the season in Manchester United’s FA Cup defeat against Middlesbrough last week.

The ongoing season could be a write off for the goalkeeper with Manchester United out of both the FA Cup and the EFL Cup.
