Bergwijn has only played a bit-part role at Spurs so far this season and a change of leadership with the arrival of Antonio Conte as their new manager has also not improved his fortunes.

The winger came on as a substitute for his national side Netherlands on Monday in a friendly against Germany and scored the equaliser in a 1-1 draw.

Ex-Dutch international Van der Vaart has acknowledged that Bergwijn has always been a great talent, but stressed he needs to leave Spurs and play on a regular basis at club level.

“I think Bergwijn is a great player anyway”, Van der Vaart told Dutch broadcaster NOS.

“He just has to get out of there [from Tottenham].

“He just has to play.”

Van de Vaart added that he went through similar experiences back in his playing days at his former side Real Madrid, where he did not get regular minutes, just like the 24-year-old at his current side, which could affect him when called up for national duty.

“I experienced it myself at Real Madrid.

“I didn’t always play there, and then you came to the Dutch national team and then you had a problem, no matter how good you were.”

Bergwijn attracted serious intertest from Dutch giants Ajax in January, but Tottenham turned down their offer for him, pricing him out of a move.

However, Ajax still have the Spurs star on their transfer radar and could launch another swoop for him in the summer.
