Celtic took a massive step towards wrestling the league title back from Rangers over the weekend when they won the crucial Glasgow derby at Ibrox.

The Bhoys are now six points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table with six games left to play and have one hand on the league title.

Donnelly stressed that Rangers had to win that game to stay in the title race but Celtic got all three points and he really cannot see his former side allowing their rivals to get back into contention.

He insisted that Celtic will remain focused and take each game as it comes but he is certain that the league title is heading towards Parkhead over the next few weeks.

Donnelly said on the Go Radio Football Show: “What a result for them [Celtic].

“I felt Rangers had to win the game, a draw wouldn’t have been good enough and Celtic have now taken a massive step.

“Six points clear, 15 goals better off as well and I can’t see them slipping up now.

“It is only three points and they will be focused but the way the games have fallen as well, if they get a result next week at home against St. Johnstone they will be nine points clear and the pressure will be on Rangers.

“I felt yesterday it is going towards Celtic.”

The league title win will also get Celtic back into the Champions League as the Scottish champions will automatically qualify for the group stage of the competition from next season onwards.
