Van Bronckhorst’s Rangers side lost 2-1 at home to Celtic on Sunday and are now six points behind their Glasgow rivals in the league table with six games left in the season.

The Gers are not expected to retain their title and there are question marks over the Dutchman’s future at Ibrox.

Rangers are still in with a chance to win the Scottish Cup and are in the quarter-finals of the Europa League as well.

Ferguson stressed that after spending some time with the Dutchman last week he is convinced that Van Bronckhorst should lead the Rangers revival next season.

He stressed that the Rangers manager now knows where he needs to strengthen over the summer and is confident that the club will back him over the next transfer window.

Ferguson said on the Go Radio Football Show: “Gio knows how big a summer it will be for him.

“He knows now the strength and weaknesses of the squad, he knows the club inside out and I have seen that last week.

“I spent a little bit of time with him and he totally convinced me that he is the right man for the job.

“He knows how big a summer it will be, he knows where he needs to strengthen to make them better and the Rangers board will 100 per cent give him the time to go and do that.”

Rangers will again face Celtic in the Scottish Cup semi-final later this month and are under pressure to stop a potential treble for their rivals.
