Further doubts have been cast on Everton’s hopes of maintaining their top flight status this season as they lost a crunch clash 3-2 away at fellow relegation candidates Burnley on Wednesday.
Despite being heavily backed financially by supremo Farhad Moshiri, Everton are currently some way away from their ambitions of challenging for Europe on a regular basis, and are now facing the prospect of suffering their first relegation since the 1950/51 season.
Former top flight star Thompson has pointed to Toffees chairman Kenwright, a long-term member of the club’s hierarchy, and insists he should asses his role in Everton’s struggles.
Thompson stressed that a lack of a clear strategy on how to run the club and horrific recruitment policy have all played a big role in Everton’s current predicament and believes a person cannot run a club based on emotions and impulsive decisions.
“Bill Kenwright has to assess his role in the demise of Everton football club”, Thompson wrote on Twitter.
“They have never had a clear strategy and recruitment has been horrific for five or six seasons now.
“You can’t run a football on emotions and impulsive decisions, very sad to see in my opinion.”
Everton have nine games left in the league to save their season with the first of them coming at home against Europe-chasing Manchester United at the weekend.
