Ten Hag has emerged as the definitive candidate to become the Manchester United manager and the club are looking to finalise a deal for him soon.
The Dutchman has impressed the Manchester United board with his vision and is reportedly looking at the job at Old Trafford as a five-year project.
There are suggestions that the 52-year-old is likely to demand a more energetic team, which could be a problem for an ageing Ronaldo, who is not known for pressing from the front.
Been stressed that Ten Hag needs to impose his will on the team from the get-go if he is to earn the respect of the squad and moving on Ronaldo could be a way to do it.
However, he also conceded that results need to come immediately for Ten Hag if he makes the decision to move on the Portuguese and it would also help him to impose his style on the squad more easily.
Been said on ESPN Netherlands: “You just have to make your choice by saying that you have selected the strongest team.
“I think you will command a lot of respect by doing that.
“If you do something like that then you are required to get results immediately.
“Otherwise, the media and the public opinion will go against you for moving on Ronaldo.
“If he shows that it is possible [to get results] with other players then he can bend the team to his will.
“It is true that Ronaldo no longer brings what he used to and then you have to make a choice.”
It remains to be seen if Ronaldo would want to stay at Manchester United if they do not qualify for the Champions League.
