Werner has struggled to justify his price tag since arriving at Chelsea in 2020 and there are suggestions that he could leave the club in the summer.

The German started a Premier League for only the tenth time this season for Chelsea but he made his mark, scoring twice in their 6-0 win over the Saints away from home.

Tuchel stressed that given the number of chances he received, the forward could and should have scored more goals today at St. Mary’s.

The Chelsea boss stressed that given he got a chance to start the onus was on the striker to make a statement and he is happy that Werner proved his quality against the Saints.

Asked about Werner, Tuchel told Sky Sports post match: “He could have scored more.

“He had huge chances and a lot of chances.

“It was his favourite position against an opponent we knew we could find spaces in behind.

“It was for him to make a statement out of it which he did.

“He could have scored more but we are happy with his strong performance.”

Werner has scored just seven times in all competitions this season but will hope to cap off the campaign on a more positive note.
