Ten Hag is all set to become the next Manchester United manager and an announcement could be made before the end of the month.

The Dutchman has had extensive conversations over transfer strategy with the Red Devils and is believed to be keen on taking his Ajax defender Timber to Old Trafford in the summer.

The 20-year-old centre-back has excelled this season and has made 39 appearances for Ten Hag’s current team across all competitions.

He is regarded as a talented young defender in the Netherlands, but Gullit is not sure that he has the physicality to excel in England.

The Dutchman stressed that the level in the Premier League will be different and he is circumspect about Timber’s ability to adapt there.

Gullit said on Dutch broadcaster Ziggo Sport: “He is a very good player, but I wonder whether he can be a defender in England.

“You have to play against Burnley and West Brom and strikers of the top seven clubs are all world-class.

“I doubt whether he can defend well enough.”

A product of the Ajax academy, Timber is already a regular in the team and has featured 70 times for the club.
