The Premier League giants have prioritised beefing up their midfield in the summer and are looking at a number of targets, something which could put them in a transfer scrap with their city rivals.

Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips are the options Manchester United are looking at in the Premier League, but they have had input from incoming manager Ten Hag as well.

And, according to Argentinian journalist Diego Yudcovsky, Manchester United are stepping up their homework on Fernandez, a Manchester City target.

Ten Hag admires the 21-year-old and is pushing Manchester United to make him the first signing of the Dutchman’s regime in the summer.

The Premier League giants will send their top scouts to run the rule over Fernandez when River Plate take on Talleres on Wednesday.

Fernandez has emerged as one of the big targets for Manchester United and the club are keen to take a final call on him soon.

The Argentine is expected to move to Europe in the summer with Manchester City also interested in signing him.

A €20m release clause would make it a straightforward deal if Manchester United decide to pull the trigger on his pursuit.
