Manchester United succumbed to another meek surrender on Tuesday night when Liverpool hammered them 4-0 at Anfield.

The Red Devils have conceded nine unanswered goals over two league games against their most bitter rivals and have not even looked like the shadow of their past sides.

Manchester United fans are hopeful that Ten Hag, over the summer, will bring some freshness into an atmosphere that first turned stale and is now seen by some as toxic.

Van Basten conceded that it was sad to see a club of Manchester United’s size looking beaten and humiliated while their club captain, Harry Maguire, appeared clueless on the pitch.

He told Dutch broadcaster Ziggo Sport: “It’s huge, the difference between Liverpool and Manchester United.

“They walked around like beaten people.

“They are one of the biggest clubs in England but not one of them showed anything. Maguire passes the ball in the same way and thinks, ‘I don’t know, are you doing it?’

“They are not thinking about solutions, it’s unbelievable.”

Ten Hag has agreed on a contract with Manchester United but Van Basten conceded that he must have some serious reservations over taking up the job after watching them getting hammered at Liverpool.

“You have to ask yourself whether Manchester United have doubts about Ten Hag or whether Ten Hag has doubts about Manchester United.

“This was really sad to see, at such a big club.”
