Manchester United confirmed the appointment of Ten Hag as their new manager today and he will take charge at the end of the season on a three-year contract with an option for another year.

The 52-year-old will be bringing his assistant at Ajax, Mitchell van der Gaag, to Old Trafford as part of his staff.

And it has been claimed that he has won the first key battle with the Manchester United board by having his way on McClaren as well.

Ten Hag spoke with McClaren when Manchester United were courting him and has always been keen on having his former FC Twente boss by his side at Old Trafford.

But there was pushback from Manchester United initially and the club wanted the Dutchman to choose someone from the existing staff.

However, Ten Hag has got his way and Manchester United have agreed to approve his request for the 60-year-old.

McClaren is now likely to be appointed as one of the Dutchman’s key lieutenants in the coming days.

Ten Hag served as the assistant to the former England boss at FC Twente and wants him due to his knowledge of Manchester United and English football.

The 60-year-old will be back in the role he previously occupied under Sir Alex Ferguson when Manchester United won the treble in 1999.
