Barcelona are said to be considering selling De Jong due to financial considerations as the club want to make a big sale before the end of June to balance the books.

There are claims in Catalunya that the Dutchman is almost certain to join Manchester United with suggestions that he could become Ten Hag’s first signing.

The midfielder is still not sold on joining Manchester United and remains keen to stay at Barcelona.

But it has been claimed that Ten Hag is now putting his thumb on the scales in order to help the club land De Jong.

The incoming Manchester United boss has reached out to the midfielder’s agent, Ali Dursun, to assess whether he is receptive to a move to Old Trafford.

De Jong is yet to completely fit into Xavi Hernandez’s system at Barcelona but he played some of his best football under Ten Hag at Ajax.

Following Ajax’s league title win, Ten Hag met John Murtough and Steve McClaren in Amsterdam this week as he draws up plans before officially taking charge of Manchester United at the end of the season.
