Joey Barton led the Gas back up to League One at the first time of asking and now wants to make sure he has a squad fit to compete in the third tier.

The Bristol Rovers boss has identified McCormick as a target and wants to add him to the ranks.

McCormick, who had a spell at Bristol Rovers on loan in the 2020/21 season, suffered the pain of relegation from League One with AFC Wimbledon in the recently concluded campaign.

It is claimed that the 23-year-old wants to stay in League One, boosting the Gas’ chances of landing him.

McCormick clocked 42 appearances for Bristol Rovers during the course of his loan from Chelsea at the club.

He could not help the Gas avoid relegation to League Two, but impressed Barton, and the boss wants him back.

The midfielder is a product of Chelsea’s youth system and left the club permanently last summer to sign for AFC Wimbledon.
