The Whites and the Magpies are in the market for attacking reinforcements and with a new striker a priority for both sides.

Newcastle have so far failed with efforts to land attacking players higher up their wish list in the ongoing window, while Leeds are yet to bolster the striker role despite being busy in terms of player recruitment.

The Premier League duo both have Bordeaux hitman Mara in their sights but it has been claimed that Newcastle have been struggling to convince to join them amidst interest from elsewhere.

Now both are set to miss out, with Bordeaux confirming they have an agreement in principle with Southampton.

The Saints have had a bid accepted by Bordeaux, which includes €11m in a base fee in addition to €2m in bonuses.

Mara is expected to jet to England in the coming days to undergo a medical before signing for the south coast side.

It remains to be seen whether Newcastle and Leeds will turn to alternative striker options with more than a month still left in the transfer window.
