The 29-year-old featured 40 times for the Black Cats, scoring once and assisting three times as they won promotion from League One last season.

After a four-year spell in League One, the Black Cats will begin their 2022/23 campaign at home against Coventry City this weekend.

Winchester, who is primarily a midfielder but is used by manager Alex Neil as more of a defensive option, expressed his willingness to play for the club in any position required and stressed his desire to prove himself in Championship.

The 29-year-old admits that Championship is a step up for his team, but believes that the Black Cats have enough quality present in the squad and, with a few more new additions, they will be able to compete at Championship level.

“The gaffer seems to like me back there [in defence], so I’m happy to play anywhere for this club”, Winchester was quoted saying by the Northern Echo.

“It’s a massive club and opportunity for me.

“Obviously, the Championship is a massive league, and an opportunity for a lot of players.

“I need to prove myself out there, and a lot of the younger lads in the team will be looking to do the same.

“It’s my first time playing in the Championship, so it’s one I’m really excited for.

“Obviously, it’s a bit step up for a lot of us, we are no mugs, but we have quality in the squad and will hopefully add another couple of players, and then we’ll be competing.”

Sunderland recently signed goalkeeper Alex Bass to add to Neil’s options between the sticks and he is expected to compete for a first team spot.
