Emerson spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Lyon after just one appearance off the bench for Thomas Tuchel’s side in their season opener against Crystal Palace.

Overall, Emerson made 35 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring once, assisting twice, earning four cautions and being sent off once.

Current Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri has earmarked the Brazil-born Italy international for the left-back slot in his squad.

Chelsea are now open to letting him move back to Rome on loan this summer, with the insertion of an option to buy set at €10m for a player now into the final two years of his deal, according to Italian daily Il Messaggero.

Sarri is trying to convince the Biancocelesti hierarchy to move on right-footed defender Elseid Hysaj, who was the primary option at left-back in the last campaign, and get Emerson on loan in his stead.

That move would see Emerson reunited with Sarri after the solitary season the Tuscan tactician spent at the helm in Stamford Bridge, winning the Europa League.

Should it come to pass, the transfer would mean another stint in Rome for the 27-year-old, having played for Lazio’s city rivals Roma before sealing his move to the English capital.
