Maddison has emerged as a big target for Newcastle in the last month of the window but negotiations with Leicester have been tough going.
Leicester rejected a first bid from Newcastle last week and are reportedly prepared to reject the second offer worth £40m as well.
It remains to be seen whether Newcastle are ready to go in with another offer but it has been claimed that it would more likely need a change in their transfer strategy to land Maddison.
Newcastle’s transfer business this summer has had one hallmark, as most of the deals were structured in such a way that saw the club pay very little upfront.
The Magpies have been more than happy to pay as little as possible at the onset and structure the rest of the transfer over several years.
However, Leicester need money now given their Financial Fair Play problems and are not prepared to dance to Newcastle’s tune.
Newcastle will have to commit to paying a large portion of any transfer fee upfront to convince Leicester to sell Maddison.
The midfielder is keen on the move but for the moment the two clubs are some way away from an agreement.
