The Magpies have already seen Leicester knock back two offers for Maddison as they are not prepared to budge from their £60m valuation of the player.

Newcastle have so far not given up on their hopes of snapping up the Foxes star but they are not sure what to do next having already missed out on a number of their initial targets earlier in the window.

However, Magpies boss Howe made it clear that he is not going to talk about his side’s interest in Maddison out of respect for the player and Leicester.

“I’m not going to talk about any individual players”, Howe told a press conference when asked about Newcastle’s interest in signing Maddison.

“I have respect for them and their club, but we’re working hard to try and add to the group.”

Howe added that he is not expecting any new transfers this week, but stressed Newcastle are remaining active in the market and is confident they can do what is necessary to improve the strength of their squad.

“No [transfers], not this week.

“Nothing has progressed any further, the situation has remained the same since we signed our last signing.

“We’re working hard to try and add to the group, we’re active in the market and we’ll wait and see if we can add players before the window shuts.

“There’s no frustration from me.

“We’ve missed out on a couple of players because they moved elsewhere and that is the delicate thing.

“It’s not always the other club – a lot of things have to drop for you.

“But I’m confident we can do what we need to improve the squad.”

The Magpies are gearing up to kick off their top flight campaign at the weekend and will host new boys Nottingham Forest at St. James’ Park.
