Earlier in the window, Newcastle submitted a bid for the Everton star, who had a breakout season last term.

Everton’s response was firm however as they were not of a mind to sell one of their best-performing players of a difficult season.

Newcastle have met similar resistance in their pursuit of Leicester City star James Maddison and could now chase one of their first summer targets.

The Magpies are weighing up whether to restart their pursuit of Gordon in the final month of the window after being unsuccessful early on.

With the Maddison trail in danger of going cold due to Leicester’s refusal of offers, Newcastle are now considering chasing Gordon again.

Signing a player on the wings is an objective for Newcastle this summer and it remains to be seen if they do come back for Gordon.

It also remains to be seen if Everton put up similar resistance to last time out as Frank Lampard wants further additions and they could find raising funds from selling Gordon to make sense.
