The 19-year-old has shone for Everton’s Under-21 side so far this campaign and got called up to train with the first team squad ahead of the draw at Brentford.

Cannon was left out of the matchday squad for that fixture by manager Frank Lampard, who preferred to play Dwight McNeil as a false nine and bring Salomon Rondon off the bench towards the end.

With the Toffees having landed another striker in Neal Maupay, Cannon appears set to be on the fringes of the first team at Goodison Park for now.

The U’s will be able to offer Cannon the game time he craves to aid his development and are intent on signing the Irish forward on loan.

Cannon is also a target for Fleetwood Town and Derby County, with the latter looking to sign an experienced striker first before any potential move for the 19-year-old.

The striker has been involved in all but one of the six goals scored by Everton’s Under-21 side in the three games he has played, recording four goals and an assist.

Cannon has recorded 43 goals and 12 assists from 84 appearances in all competitions for Everton’s youth sides but is yet to make his first team debut.

The Irishman could yet follow Ellis Simms and Nathan Broadhead out of the exit door, with the pair having left on loan this summer, to gain more experience.
