Fernandez is down the pecking order at St James’ Park and faces a season of limited game time if he stays put at the club.

Newcastle have been trying to find him a loan destination and Stoke, who have just appointed Alex Neil as their new manager, were interested.

The Potters though have pulled out of a swoop for the veteran centre-back and he will not be heading to link up with Neil.

Fernandez may though have a Championship option as now Coventry are moving for him and may well sign him.

The Sky Blues are interested in signing Fernandez on loan to add to Mark Robins’ defensive resources.

The clock is ticking though and Coventry will need to work quickly in order to push the deal over the line.

Newcastle would also likely have to pay a portion of Fernandez’s wages while he is on loan due to his hefty St James’ Park pay packet.
