After losing Ross Stewart, Daniel Ballard, and Dennis Cirkin previously, Ellis Simms was added to the list of injuries for the Black Cats on Wednesday night.

Despite losing a number of first-team players, Mowbray’s young squad came through as Patrick Roberts scored twice, Jack Clarke scored one and Elliot Embleton contributed two assists as the Royals were beaten 3-0.

Mowbray was delighted with Sunderland’s performance and hailed the youngsters for their brilliant display against Reading.

The Sunderland boss stressed that his squad is full of brilliant players who are eager to compete and show their quality when presented with an opportunity.

Mowbray further added that he enjoys working with a team of talented players to whom he need not convey every nuance.

“They’re all athletic, they can all run and compete, and their quality with the ball, you can see they can all pick the first pass, play around the corner and switch the play”, Mowbray was quoted saying by The Northern Echo.

“They’re good footballers, and it’s good to work with good footballers because you don’t have to tell them every pass.

“They see the passes and get turned on their first touch, they let the ball run across their body and play around the corner.

“They’re good footballers.

“I know in my career, I’ve had to spend a lot of time repeating the things that a lot of these lads do naturally.

The Black Cats are sitting in sixth place in the league table and next they will lock horns with Watford on Saturday.
