Edwards caught the eye with his performance against his former club on Tuesday night when Sporting Lisbon beat Tottenham 2-0 at home.

The winger was once compared to Lionel Messi by Mauricio Pochettino, but Spurs allowed him to join Vitoria on a free transfer in 2019 with a 50 per cent sell-on clause.

Sporting Lisbon signed him in January this year from Vitoria for a fee of £9m, but it has been claimed that Spurs also managed to have their say.

The Portuguese giants agreed to transfer the sell-on clause as well rather than putting the deal in jeopardy and Tottenham pocketing £4.5m from the move.

The arrangement allowed Tottenham to continue to hold the 50 per cent sell-on clause and they are now expected to make big money from it.

Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim has backed him to get into the England squad soon and he is attracting interest from clubs in the Premier League.

He has a £52m release clause in his contract and Spurs could pocket £26m from the deal if he moves clubs in the near future.

The clause also theoretically offers the north London club a chance to sign Edwards for £26m as well.

The winger has three goals and registered three assists in eight appearances for Sporting Lisbon this season.
