Maguire lost his place in the Manchester United side after the first two league games and despite being the club captain, he has become the third choice behind Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

The centre-back faced further criticism for his performance for England against Germany during the break and is not expected to be in the starting eleven when Manchester United take on Manchester City on Sunday.

Ten Hag stressed that he is prepared to work on Maguire’s game and back him and insisted that there is obvious talent there in the centre-back.

However, the Manchester United manager indicated that it is still down to the player to produce on the pitch and turn his form around.

He said in a press conference: “I have to coach him and back him.

“I back him because I believe in him. I can see his qualities. Quality is there.

“Almost 50 caps for England, he has high potential.

“Then it is about him.

“We all believe in him.”

With a congested fixture list staring at Manchester United, Maguire will hope to get more game time in the coming weeks and get a chance to prove his detractors wrong.
