Creswell has gone on loan to Millwall this season, where he has played nine times in the Championship and the centre-back even has three goals for the Lions.

Gelhardt on the other hand stayed at Elland Road, but has only started one game in the Premier League and not scored a single goal at senior level.

Walton does not believe though that Cresswell would have drastically improved things for Leeds this season, thinking that he is in the right place for his development.

The ex-Leeds star thinks Gelhardt should have joined Cresswell in going on loan to the second tier to earn more game-time.

Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds regarding Cresswell being the answer to Leeds’ problems, Walton said: “I am not sure how many minutes he’s played in the Premier League, but I don’t think he was ready for Premier League football.

“I still don’t think he’s ready for regular Premier League football, he’s still a young boy who needs to learn his trade and he’s in the right place.

“The same with Joe Gelhardt.

“I said from minute one at the start of the season he should have gone out on loan and played in the Championship week in, week out for development.”

While Cresswell has earned praise for his performances at Millwall, he has only been involved in two clean sheets for the club.
