Boro sacked Chris Wilder earlier this month following a horrendous start to the season that saw them languishing in the relegation zone.
They have won one and lost one since Wilder’s sacking and the club have been keen to bring in a new manager as soon as possible.
And it has been claimed that Carrick has emerged as the top target for Middlesbrough for their vacant managerial post.
The former midfielder was part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaching staff at Manchester United and also managed them on a caretaker basis.
The former England star has been looking to start his career in management and is now in advanced talks with Boro.
West Brom are also looking at Carrick as an option following dismissing Steve Bruce on Monday.
But the former midfielder is believed to be keener on a move to Middlesbrough at this moment in time.
Boro are 21st in the Championship table on 13 points, just two points above West Brom, who are in the relegation zone.
