Celtic suffered another defeat in the Champions League group stage when they lost 2-0 to RB Leipzig at Parkhead on Tuesday.
They need results from their last two games to even have a chance of being in the Europa League in the latter half of the season.
Ange Postecoglou’s side have shown brilliant attacking ability even in the Champions League, but they have suffered due to their porous defence.
Wilson stressed that the Australian cannot be criticised for the attacking methods Celtic have shown this season, but insisted that it is important to find a defensive balance in the Champions League.
He is not advocating a drastic change in tactics but the former Bhoy is certain that Celtic fans cannot be enjoying getting beaten every week in Europe’s elite club competition.
The former Celtic star said on Off the Ball: “I am a big believer at this stage that you need to find a balance.
“What Ange Postecoglou has been doing attack-wise, not many can criticise and it’s the players on the night who didn’t take the chances so I don’t think you can point that at the manager.
“But at this level of competition, there is got to be a balance in how you defend as well.
“And leaving a back four and goalkeeper to really defend against the world’s best players is only going to end in one way.
“I am not saying they need a drastic change in tactics and the Celtic fans are totally against that because they want what they are watching.
“But you can’t love getting walloped every week in the Champions League, it is not a good record to have.”
In the Champions League, Celtic will next host Shakhtar Donetsk before travelling to Real Madrid next month.
