Haaland has scored 15 goals in his first nine Premier League appearances and has already netted 20 times in all competitions this season.

The Norwegian was an unused substitute in Manchester City’s 0-0 draw at FC Copenhagen on Tuesday night as Pep Guardiola gave his star man a break ahead of his side’s visit to Anfield this weekend.

The forward will lead the line against Liverpool and Thompson insisted that the Reds defenders will relish the challenge of trying to keep him quiet on Sunday.

Van Dijk and Konate are expected to start against Manchester City and Thompson pointed towards their physical attributes that could come in handy against Haaland.

The former Liverpool star said on Off the Ball: “The players will be looking forward to it.

“Van Dijk and Konate are two big strong lads and if you look at the size of them, I am in awe of them.

“When I doing pitch-side for TV at Anfield, I see these two boys together and my god, they are so big and powerful, it’s absolutely terrific.

“I think they will be looking forward to it.”

Liverpool are tenth in the league table and have won just two of their opening eight league games.
