The Magpies earned a hard-fought point at Old Trafford against Manchester United on Sunday and are now looking to welcome Everton at St. James’ Park.

Everton seemed to have turned a corner this season before their last two defeats against Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, and are sitting 14th in the Premier League table.

However, Howe insisted that he has seen good progress from Frank Lampard’s team and stressed that he is expecting another tight affair when his side take on the Toffees on Wednesday night.

He pointed out that Everton have the ability to hurt his side on counter-attacks and set-pieces but believes that at home Newcastle will back themselves to get a win over the Merseyside outfit.

Talking about Everton, Howe said in a press conference: “Definitely they’ve made progress.

“The games we had against them last season were very tight.

“We anticipate a similar test.

“They’ve recruited well and have a very physical side.

“They’ll be a threat in transition and on set pieces but we back ourselves at home.”

Newcastle are sixth in the league table and will hope to notch up a win under the floodlights at home on Wednesday night.
