Malik Tillman and John Lundstram scored in the second half to give Rangers a two-goal lead at Fir Park but Stuart McKinstry’s 77th minute strike meant a nervy finish to the game.
Rangers managed to hold on to their 3-1 lead and remained on Celtic’s coattails in the Scottish Premiership title race this season.
The Scottish giants were coming into the game on the back of a mauling at the hands of Liverpool in the Champions League and Ferguson stressed that the important thing is that they got the win.
He conceded that Rangers were not great at Fir Park but stressed the importance of the three points in the context of the title race and what happened before in the Champions League.
The Rangers legend said on the Go Radio Football Show: “Rangers had to get the three points, no doubt about it, after the result against Liverpool in midweek.
“It wasn’t a great performance with a lot of quality. Probably the only bit of quality within the game was Tillman’s goal.
“But the main thing for Rangers was making sure that they come away from Fir Park with the three points.
“The last 12 to 13 minutes once Motherwell got the goal back, you are then wondering what the mentality is going to be or whether they are going to survive this.
“But they saw it out and the main thing was getting the three points and staying two points behind Celtic.”
Rangers will be in action on Wednesday night when they host Dundee at Ibrox in the quarter-finals of the Scottish League Cup.
