Eddie Howe took over a relegation-threatened Newcastle from Steve Bruce last season and led the Tyneside outfit to an 11th place finish, their highest since the 2017/18 season.

Newcastle are sitting in sixth place in the Premier League table, having acquired 15 points from ten matches with only one defeat so far in the season.

Longstaff, who has featured in all ten league games for Howe’s side this season, believes that the Magpies have to be realistic with their aims and stressed that the club need to build on last year.

The 24-year-old admitted that everyone in the Newcastle squad wants to finish as high as possible in the league table this season and believes that getting into the top ten would be an improvement from last year.

“If we can break into the top ten, it’s building on last year”, Longstaff told Newcastle United TV.

“Everyone wants to get really excited and as players we’re the same, we want to finish as high as we can.

“But I think you’ve also got to be realistic in terms of what we can do.

“We’ve got a really good team, and as long as we can keep adding to it over time, there’s no doubt that we can get to where the owners and where everyone wants us to get.

“Everyone plays a part in how we get there, and this season is about building on from last year.

“Hopefully we can maybe sneak up on some teams, and you never know what can happen.”

Newcastle are currently undefeated in their last five league games and Howe’s side will be motivated to continue their unbeaten run against Everton tonight.
