Given the absence of the Black Cats’ first-choice centre-forward pair of Ross Stewart and Ellis Simms due to injury, the 25-year-old has been utilised in a variety of roles at the Stadium of Light so far.

Roberts joined Sunderland from Manchester City in January and has so far made 30 appearances for the club.

Having found a permanent home after a plethora of loan spells spanning England, France, Spain and Scotland, the winger wants to find the back of the net more often than on the two occasions he has done so far in the Championship.

Roberts admitted to feeling more confident about his abilities with every passing day, due in part to Black Cats manager Tony Mowbray’s input.

The playmaker has targeted adding more to his game in terms of end product regardless of who leads the line for Sunderland right from the start of the season.

That’s something I want to do if Ross or Ellis or whoever was up front, I’d want to add more goals to my game anyway”, Roberts said to the Sunderland Echo.

They would maybe help it a bit more because they are natural strikers but that has always been my idea from the start of the season to get as many goals as I can and assist them when I can as well.

I’m feeling more and more confident every day and the manager gives me that.”

Sunderland are currently in 13th place in the Championship table but are only four points behind Norwich City, who occupy the last playoff place at the moment.
