In the first game after Gerrard was given the sack, the Villans ran out 4-0 winners at home against Brentford, leading by three goals after the first 15 minutes of that game.

Aaron Danks has been put in charge of the squad for the interim as the Villa hierarchy continue their search for Gerrard’s successor.

O’Hara believes that the Villans’ players did not put in the effort as Gerrard’s reign in charge drew to a close, citing that there were no massive change after the Liverpool legend’s departure besides the kind of effort put in by the squad.

The 36-year-old added that he found the indifference from the Villa players annoying while stressing that the group need to have a look at themselves and their mentality as a collective.

O’Hara further noted that Gerrard did everything he possibly could to get results for the Villans but in the event of no cooperation from his players, he was fighting a losing battle.

It actually annoyed me because they obviously downed tools for Gerrard. Look, Aston Villa are a good team, got some good players”, O’Hara said on talkSPORT.

But it annoyed me that the energy and the performance that they put in is kind of where you need to have a look at yourselves as players and the mentality in the group.

Because you’ve obviously shown that you’ve downed tools for Gerrard and the coaching staff and I think that’s not right.

Gerrard was doing everything he could to try and get results for that football club.

When you look at it, nothing changed massively, just the effort changed.”

Aston Villa are now in 14th place in the Premier League table after 12 games, with the win against the Bees just the third of their league campaign so far.
