In anticipation of limited opportunities at Stamford Bridge this season, Hudson-Odoi went on loan to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

He has played ten games so far for the German club, but only has a solitary assist to his name and no goals.

That is something he needs to rectify, according to recently-appointed Bayer Leverkusen boss Alonso, with Hudson-Odoi himself realising the importance of adding goals to his game.

Speaking to The Athletic, Hudson-Odoi said: “He’s been telling me, ‘You’re playing really well, you’re working well, you’re getting the ball and helping to create chances. But you have to have that killer instinct of getting in the box and scoring goals’.

“That’s one of the things I obviously need to add to my game.”

Hudson-Odoi had to be out with injury for two months last season, but now in Germany he feels like he is getting his level back up and also being more forward-thinking.

“I feel like I’m getting back to being myself again — getting back to that stage before the injury when I was more direct and would dribble and stuff like that”, Hudson-Odoi added.

“The last couple of seasons I’ve been a bit more backward, passing more; I’ve been more safe.

“I feel I’m doing much better now.

“I feel sharper and more direct on the ball.

“All that’s missing are the goals and the assists now.

“Then all will be good.”

Leverkusen have performed poorly in the league so far, just on the edge of the relegation zone currently having previously spent time in it, and the German team would greatly appreciate goals from Hudson-Odoi as well.
