The 20-year-old left-back spent last season on loan at Coventry City in the Championship, featuring 40 times while scoring three goals, but the player was left out of Chelsea’s 2022/23 pre-season tour of the United States by former manager Thomas Tuchel.

Maatsen signed a season-long loan deal with Vincent Kompany’s Burnley this season and has made eleven appearances for the Clarets, scoring one goal while laying on four assists.

The left-back has revealed that he took the decision to go out on another loan at the beginning of the transfer window this season and stressed that he is adamant about proving that he is ready to play for Chelsea next season.

Maatsen stated that he moved early in the transfer window to kick-start his season as soon as possible and that he believes Burnley are the ideal club for him to develop.

“I didn’t hesitate to wait in the transfer window, I said I wanted to go out on another loan”, Maatsen told Standard Sport.

“I wanted to prove during my spell that I’m ready for the next step next season, that’s why I chose Burnley.

“I thought the quicker I move then I can apply myself to kick on this season.

“It was the perfect match.”

The Blues loanee will be eager to impress new Chelsea boss Graham Potter with his performance with Burnley this season and get into next season’s plans.
