Yilmaz got his first chance to play in the Champions League in Naples and he struggled in the first few minutes of the game as Rangers quickly conceded two goals.
However, the defender and the rest of the team’s performance improved and Ferguson was impressed with what he saw from the Turkish left-back in Italy.
He conceded that after the first 25 minutes he did think that Yilmaz was in for a long night but he was pleased to see the defender show character and fight in the rest of the performance.
The Rangers legend was also happy to see the energy he added to the side and is hopeful that the performance against Napoli will give him confidence for the rest of the season.
Ferguson said on the Go Radio Football Show: “What one thing that tells me about Yilmaz is tough first 25 minutes, but the boy has got a bit of character.
“I was looking at the first 25 and thinking this is going to be a long 90 minutes but he showed that got something about him.
“He got stronger as the game went on and one thing about him is that he has got an engine.
“Up and down, good energy about him and so hopefully this game will do a world of good.”
It remains to be seen whether Yilmaz keeps his place in the team when Rangers take on Aberdeen this Saturday in the Scottish Premiership.
