Two wins just before the World Cup break helped Liverpool to close in on the top four but they are still sixth in the table and seven points behind in the race to finish in the Champions League spots.

The Reds made a bad start to the season and have lost four and drawn four of their opening 14 Premier League games.

Shaqiri is aware of the poor start his former side made but is confident that they have the quality in the squad to bounce back.

He stressed that it is perfectly normal for a side to struggle to maintain their high standards every year and more teams now know how to play against Liverpool.

However, the winger is certain by the end of the season Liverpool will be in the Champions League spots.

“I’m always watching the Premier League and especially the Liverpool games”, the Swiss told The Athletic.

“It was a difficult start for them but I’m sure they will come back strong.

“They have the quality. This is football sometimes.

“For me it’s normal.

“You can’t always be at the top and in the best shape like they have been in recent years.

“Now maybe the other teams know more about how to play against Liverpool.

“But I’m sure Liverpool will come out of this.

“There are still so many games to play.

“They will push and I’m sure they will play in the Champions League again next season.

“I know how important that is for the club.”

Liverpool will be playing against Lyon and AC Milan during the World Cup break before taking on Manchester City in the last 16 of the EFL Cup on 22nd December.
