Rangers confirmed the appointment of Beale as their new manager on Monday night and he is set to get to work with his squad this week.

With a nine-point gap with Celtic to make up, Beale has little time to get his squad up to speed before they get back in action against Hibernian in the league in the second week of December.

But Walker feels Beale can make an early statement of intent if he can convince Morelos and Kent to sign new contracts with the club.

Both players are out of contract at the end of the season and it would be a huge boost for the new Rangers boss if they agree to sign new deals.

However, the former Scotland star feels Beale should offload them soon and bring in new players if they do not agree to commit to the club for the long term.

Walker said on the Go Radio Football Show: “He has to make a statement of intent.

“I am wondering immediately, can he get Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent to not only up their game but can he get them to commit to the club?

“Their contracts are up at the end of the season, amongst others but those two are pretty special names over the last few years for Rangers.

“If they were to commit to Michael Beale and Rangers for longer than their current contract, I think that would be a huge boost.

“He has to somehow convince them or else get them out of the door and get players in who are just as good.

“But if they are just as good, they will cost money.”

Both Morelos and Kent worked under Beale when he was Steven Gerrard’s right-hand man at Rangers previously.
