Beale was confirmed as the new manager by Rangers on Monday evening after a week-long wait following the sacking of Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

The 42-year-old is rated highly at Rangers and was Gerrard’s right-hand man when Rangers won the league title under him in the 2020/21 season.

Beale is rated as a brilliant coach in football circles and his work under the former Rangers boss was also lauded.

But Walker insisted that Gerrard was the manager of Rangers and he is the one who should take all the credit for the club winning the league that season.

He is aware of Beale’s coaching abilities but admitted that he remains surprised that Rangers went for such an inexperienced manager.

Walker said on the Go Radio Football Show: “Let’s not forget Steven Gerrard was the manager and Michael Beale was the coach.

“I have heard a lot of good things about his coaching ability but Steven Gerrard was the manager and Steven Gerrard delivered that title.

“I totally get that Michael Beale had enough of coaching and wants to be the number one and wants the responsibility.

“No one has got any problems with that but I am just surprised that he is being given that opportunity at a club like size of Rangers.”

Beale moved out of Gerrard’s shadow in the summer when he left the Aston Villa coaching staff to take charge of Queens Park Rangers in the Championship.
