The midfielder is the breakout star to emerge from the World Cup after winning the Player of the Tournament and a World Cup winners’ medal.
The Argentinian only joined Benfica last summer but there are serious rumours that he could move on in the winter transfer window, with the Portuguese side claimed to be concerned Newcastle will swoop.
Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid are also closely monitoring the situation and Chelsea are reportedly prepared to trigger his €120m release clause.
But it has been claimed that Fernandez is not desperate to find the exit door at Benfica in January.
The player is happy with the Portuguese giants and would prefer a move in the summer transfer window.
It also plays into Benfica’s hands as they also do not want to sell the player in the middle of the season.
Most of his suitors are now trying to assess whether any of the clubs could try to force the situation in the winter window.
But for the moment, Fernandez seems content to spend the rest of the season at Benfica.
