Everton’s board stayed away from the crucial Premier League clash against Southampton at the weekend amid suggestions there were credible threats against them.

Merseyside Police though have said that they did not receive any reports of threats and Keys is baffled by the situation.

Keys is unsure why no Everton directors attended the game to suffer along with the fans as the Toffees lost against Southampton.

He wrote on Twitter, responding to the police saying no threats were received: “I’m even more bemused now.

“Why didn’t anyone from the Board turn up and go through the pain like real fans?

“Answers please @Everton.”

Everton are in big trouble in the Premier League and are only kept off the bottom of the table by goal difference.

Frank Lampard’s side have won just three league games all season, the worst total in the league, with even Southampton and West Ham United having won four.
