Southampton are in the market to add extra options in the final third as they bid to fight their way out of relegation trouble in the Premier League.
Braga star Vitinha looks set to head to French side Marseille, but they could capture Genk hitman Paul Onuachu.
Southampton are also making efforts to sign Atalanta star Zapata, who has in previous windows been linked with Newcastle United and Everton.
However, Atalanta have no time for the proposal sent by Southampton for the striker, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato.
Southampton’s proposal entailed taking the player on loan on deadline day with a right to purchase set at €15m.
It remains to be seen if Southampton come back with an improved proposal for the Atalanta striker and if they can convince the Italian club to part ways with him.
Zapata’s contract with Atalanta ends in the summer of next year and he has just the one goal for the Serie A side this season.
