Marsch was shown the door at the start of the week following a harrowing run of form that saw Leeds go winless over seven Premier League games.

The American was backed by the Leeds board in the winter window but they ultimately decided to cut the cord with the club perilously close to the relegation zone.

Giles believes that Marsch never really became popular with Leeds fans despite him succeeding in keeping the club in the Premier League last season.

He believes the first big mistake he made as Leeds manager was to come in and criticise his predecessor Bielsa, who remains a cult figure at Elland Road.

The Leeds legend feels that was never going to go down well with the Leeds supporters who adored the Argentinian.

Giles said on Off the Ball: “I don’t think the Leeds crowd ever took to him.

“I think he made a big mistake when he came in and he did an interview and he was very critical of Mr Bielsa who the Leeds fans loved.

“That didn’t do any good to him whatsoever and the Leeds fans never took to Jesse Marsch.”

Leeds are without a win in the Premier League since October and are sitting 16th in the league table.
