Liverpool ended a four-game run without a win by beating Everton 2-0 at Anfield in the Merseyside derby on Monday night.
The Reds are still sitting ninth in the Premier League standings but there are hopes that a win over Everton could revive their campaign and get them back into the top-four race.
However, Giles feels that getting into the top four will remain a difficult goal for Liverpool given how inconsistent they have been this season.
He conceded that the Reds were good against Everton, but stressed the importance of being consistent and says that they need to show that they can play at a certain level after getting the result against their local rivals.
The former midfielder feels it is still too early to say that Liverpool can fight their way back into the top-four race.
Asked if Liverpool can be in the top four this season, Giles said on the Off the Ball: “It’s realistic but difficult.
“The consistency or the lack of consistency has been dreadful with Liverpool this season.
“They played well and deserved to win the other night but it has happened a couple of times and then lose to teams that you never believed they were going to lose to.
“It was only a couple of matches before Klopp said that it was the worst performance as a manager he ever had.
“It was good to get back on winning terms against Everton, but we have to wait and see if that’s the way it is going to be or are they going back to the ways where in some matches they were beaten by teams who should not be anywhere near them.
“We have to wait another few weeks to see if Liverpool are back to where they should be or is there something there that we do not know about that’s given them such a bad season.”
Liverpool will have a chance to prove that they are back in form when they take on Newcastle United away from home on Saturday.
