Newcastle have lost just once in the Premier League this season, when Liverpool scored an injury-time winner to beat the Magpies at Anfield earlier in the campaign.

They are sitting fourth in the Premier League table but their recent form has been patchy and they have won just one of their last six games in the league.

Quinn stressed that everyone has been waiting to see Newcastle slip this season and conceded that they have played better football in the EFL Cup recently than in the Premier League.

He admitted that the lack of goals is a concern but pointed out that their defensive robustness shows that they deserve to be in the top four despite their problems in the final third.

The Newcastle legend said on LFC TV: “With the start that Newcastle had, everybody has been waiting for us to slip up a little bit.

“They have been playing a lot better stuff in the EFL Cup and they have stuttered and stammered in the Premier League.

“Goals haven’t come on a regular basis.

“[Alexander] Isak’s been out, he has just come back into the team and Callum [Wilson], a lot of the times, has been leading the line all on his own.

“They are difficult to break down, they are difficult to score against.

“They are not free scoring but at the same time, they deserve to be in the top four.”

Newcastle will hope to get revenge when Liverpool travel to St. James’ Park today for their return fixture.
