Marsch was sacked earlier this month as Leeds were in freefall and the slump has not stopped as the Whites now find themselves in the relegation zone.

Leeds decided to sack Marsch in the week after the end of the transfer window, in which the Whites spent money and brought in Maximilian Wober, Georginio Rutter, Diogo Monteiro and Weston McKennie.

For Newsome though, Leeds’ decision to keep Marsch during the World Cup is a head-scratcher and he thinks that was the time to get rid of the American.

The ex-Leeds star thinks the Whites would have benefitted from bringing in a new manager during the World Cup, as he would have had a window to work with this season, unlike any appointment now.

Speaking on BBC Radio Leeds, Newsome said: “I think it’s a real head-scratcher that they decided to keep him before the World Cup.

“I think that was the optimum time, if you were going to make a change, you’d make a change while the World Cup was on.

“You would have six weeks to work with players who weren’t on World Cup duty and change the philosophy and then that manager has a window to work in and bring players in and get rid of players he doesn’t want.

“That for me would have been the optimum time.

“They chose not to do that, they chose to stick by Jesse and furthermore, chose to back him financially in quite large sums.”

Leeds have so far been unsuccessful in bringing in Marsch’s replacement and they are now in a worse position than when the American was sacked, with games left to rescue the season dwindling.
